The Police map NYC end to reunion tour

The Police [ tickets ] will go out with a bang, not a whimper, ending their grueling 30th Anniversary reunion tour with a concert in New York City to benefit public broadcasting.All tickets for the band's Aug. 7 appearance at Madison Square Garden will be doled out as thank-you gifts for donation pledges made to New York public television stations Thirteen/WNET and WLIW21, making the show the largest single fundraising event in the history of public television, according to a press release.The tickets will be given away beginning June 14 to people who pledge at various levels ($750, $500, $350, $150) to either of the two stations. Members of the Police fan club will have first crack at the tickets beginning June 9; see the band's website for more information on the advance sale.The group is set to kick off the final US leg of its 14-month trek July 11 in Ridgefield, WA, the first of 15 cities remaining on the outing. Elvis Costello & The Imposters will provide opening support on the remaining dates of the tour except for the New York City show, which will feature the B-52s. Dates are below.Last month, The Police pledged $1 million to New York City's MillionTreesNYC campaign, which aims to plant 10,000 trees to create new urban forests."We kicked off our very first American tour at CBGB's in 1978 and this summer, 30 years later, our journey will come full circle as we play our final show here in New York City," The Police said in a joint statement issued in early May. "We are honored to partner with public television and have a deep respect for their commitment to arts and culture."The band's reunion trek moved more than 2.5 million tickets in 2007, making it the year's top-grossing tour, according to a press release. Rumored plans of a new studio album were quashed when frontman Sting told a reporter for the All Headline News service in February "there will be no new album, no big new tour, once we're done with our reunion tour, that's it for The Police."The Police released their last studio album, "Synchronicity," nearly 25 years ago. Sting, Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers celebrated their 30th anniversary last year with a best-of collection on A&M Records, and they reportedly have plans to release a live DVD comprising recent concert footage shot in South America.

Jack Black - Tenacious D Plan The Who Tribute

JACK BLACK's crazy rock duo TENACIOUS D are to use their METALLICA support shows in England as a platform to honour their heroes THE WHO.

Black and pal Kyle Gass are rehearsing a The Who medley, which they'll perform at their upcoming British shows.

The funnyman tells WENN, "We're doing some concerts in August, opening for Metallica and we are very excited.

"We've decided to use the occasion to pay some kind of tribute to The Who and do a medley of sorts, probably from The Who Live At Leeds, which is the greatest live album of all time.

"I can't wait to play in front of that many people; we've never played as huge a crowd as 50,000, so it'll be fun."

Tenacious D won't be the only act honouring The Who this summer (08) - Pearl Jam, the Flaming Lips and the Foo Fighters will pay tribute to the group when the British rockers are feted at VH1's third annual Rock Honors show in California in July (12Jul08).

Foals launch Club NME in San Francisco

Foals launched Club NME in San Francisco last night (May 22) at the Popscene venue with a raucous live set.

The band were met with a rapturous reception from the crowd, who began dancing manically to 'Cassius' in particular.

Foals played extended jam versions of songs such as 'The French Open' and other tracks from their debut album, 'Antidotes'.

Frontman Yannis Philippakis warmed to the crowd, praising them for their spirited response to the show. "Their applause has nothing on you guys," he said, comparing the audience to a typical New York crowd.

Club NME returns to the venue on June 19 with a set from These New Puritans.

Canton, OH-based rock band Lovedrug, lED by singer/guitarist Michael Shepard, has shared the stage with artists as divers as the Killers, Robert Plant, Switchfoot, Sam Phillips, Creeper Lagoon, Eisley, and Matchbook Romance. Since forming in June 2002, the band has seen various lineup changes, which included Matthew Putman (Ester Drang, Unwed Sailor) on drums. Quickly later forming, Lovedrug recorded a five-song EP, followed by the Rocknroll EP in summertime 2003. After interest from various labels, the stripe settled with The Militia Group, which issued Pretend You're Alive in 2004. The record album sold well and the group supported it over the following twelvemonth on tours with the Juliana Theory and Copeland. Upstreamed to Columbia Records, subsequent hullabaloo among key label figures caused Lovedrug to in the end get itself released from its squeeze and indorse to Militia. The band's soph album, Everything Starts Where It Ends, appeared in early 2007 and it cracked into the Billboard Top 200.
